There was an earthquake of 7.5 on Papua New Guinea and a tsunami warning

A 7.5 earthquake shook the shores of Papua New Guinea and activated a tsunami warning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The country is located in the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where the collision between tectonic plates tends to cause earthquakes and significant volcanic activity. Earthquake of magnitude 7.2.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred 44 kilometers north-east of Kokopo Island and 10 kilometers deep. In response to this data, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an alert.

"It was huge, really huge, very alarming," said Megan Martin, director of a hotel complex in Kokopo, Ropopo Plantation.

The Tsunami Warning Center said that "from the preliminary parameters (…), it is possible that tsunami waves occur in the Coasts located within 1,000 km of earthquake epicenter"

In February 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the mountainous region of the country, causing the fall of houses and avalanches in which at least 125 people died.

The scale of the disaster was only known several days later, due to weak infrastructure and media in Papua New Guinea.
