Presidents Mario Abdo Benítez and Mauricio Macri, from Paraguay and Argentina, made it possible Friday to cross the border on the Paraná river using the coronation of the hydroelectric dam of Yacyretá, which they administer bilaterally.

The bridge of about 6.7 kilometers connects Ayolas villages of Paraguay to Ituzaingó of Argentina.

The island of Yacyretá is part of the Paraguayan department of Misiones, located 310 km south of Asunción, and extends over the Argentine province of Corrientes, 1,000 km north of Buenos Aires.

"Paraguayans and United Argentines have more opportunities to grow, to grow and live better," Macri said. He added that with renewable energies, the Yacyretá plant – which literally means the country of the moon in Guaraní – "we contribute to global energy security as well as to food security by producing more food ".

The pbadage built at 70 meters above sea level can only be used by cars and minibuses. Movement of pedestrians, motorcycles or animal-drawn vehicles will not be permitted.

The binational dam construction treaty was signed in 1973 and the first turbine was installed in 1994. Four years later, it began producing electricity.

The Argentine President said at the end of his speech that the production of Yacyretá contributed to the protection of the environment and that "as Argentines and Mercosur (regional customs bloc), we are concerned about the fires in the Amazon ".

"I contacted President (Jair) Bolsonaro with the help of Argentina to fight this disaster and I did the same with the Bolivian people," he said. -he adds.

Abdo Benítez, for his part, stressed the importance of the communication between Ayolas and Ituzaingó, because "it will contribute to improve the development of the two peoples".

Paraguay has no exit to the sea but has nine border crossing points with Argentina.

The plant has 20 turbines with an installed capacity of 3,200 megawatts and an average annual output of 20,000 gigawatts per hour, according to information from the local dam office.

2,630 million liters of water per hour can pbad through each turbine.

In the initial project, the construction cost was approximately $ 1,500 million, but when completed in 2011, the final cost increased to $ 11,500 million.

The dam was inaugurated on July 7, 1998 by Argentine presidents Carlos Menem and his Paraguayan couple, Juan Carlos Wasmosy.
