A man was arrested Wednesday night after entering New York Cathedral with two cans of gas, liquid roasts and a magic shot, police said. The incident occurred two days after the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral.
John Miller, head of the New York Police Department (NYPD), said the arrested individual – identified as being 37-year-old Marc Lamparello, of the New York Post – claimed to have taken a shortcut across the cathedral, after his vehicle would run out of fuel even though his answers were "inconsistent and evasive".
"We do not know what his mental state is or what his motivation is," Miller said at a press conference in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral, a Gothic structure located in the heart of Manhattan and completed in 1878.
A security officer interrogated the man, who asked him where he was heading and informed him that he could not enter the cathedral with these objects, police said.
"At that time, apparently, gasoline was spread on the ground when (the man) returned," Miller said. The guard informed the NYPD antiterrorist bureau officers who were parked at the door and arrested him.
"He said he was crossing the cathedral … that his vehicle was running out of gas," Miller explained. "We are looking at your vehicle, the gasoline was not lacking and we stopped it," he said.
On Monday, a fire seriously damaged the Gothic cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the most visited monuments in the world. The church was under construction and researchers favor the trace of an accident.
