A man was arrested Thursday in New York for planning an explosive attack in Times Square, located in the center of the city. The suspect planned to launch explosives on the pedestrians of the central tourist destination famous for its theaters and giant advertising screens.
According to the New York Daily News, members of the Counter-Terrorism Joint Task Force in New York, formed of FBI agents and detectives from the police department, began following this man and eventually stopped.
Police began the operation after discovering that the suspect was investigating how to obtain grenades and arrested him in a covert operation when he went to buy the devices, reported CNN.
He is scheduled to appear in a federal court in downtown Brooklyn and the US Attorney General's office will provide more details in the next few hours. Authorities believe that he acted alone, the media reported.
