They attacked a Mexican mayor "for not keeping his promises": he was kidnapped and dragged by car

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Las Margaritas, Chiapas, when some 30 indigenous farmers from the community of Tojolabal, living in a rural area of ​​the municipality, arrived armed with sticks at the mayor's office. .

According to witnesses, they would have submitted the mayor to the municipal police who guarded the premises and broke the doors and windows of the property, Jorge Luis Escandón.

The official was tied up and pushed out of the seat of the municipality. The crowd tried to get him into the van, but before he tied his hands to the vehicle and started it, dragging him dozens of meters in front of the mayor's office.

Municipal employees and police came to defend Escandón, so there was a battle row With the peasants. After the fight, the mayor was released and prevented from going to Santa Rita El Invernadero, the region of Las Margaritas where annoying peasants live.

The riot left a 10 wounded and 11 arrested which were turned over to the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Native Justice Attorney. The Chiapas state police arrived at Las Margaritas to restore order.

The public prosecutor, Jorge Luis Llaven, confirmed that Escandón had been saved by the police and that he was safe.

Llaven indicated that the violent demonstration was intended "to require public resources, in particular cash", according to the new policy of social assistance, which plans to provide resources directly to beneficiaries, established by the leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to avoid acts of corruption

This is not the first time that the inhabitants of Santa Rita El Invernadero make a violent protest. Four months ago, they also vandalized the municipality's headquarters to ask the mayor to respect the commitments made during the 2018 election campaign.

Las Margaritas, a town of 20,000 inhabitants, is located about 50 km from the border with Guatemala.

Mexican mayors, especially in remote areas of major urban centers, are recurrent aggression victims both for conflicts with neighbors and for the action of organized crime groups, which forces them to serve their interests.

According to data from the National Association of Mayors (ANAC), more than a hundred have been executed since 2006.
