Indonesian police reported today that the suicide bombing yesterday against Makassar Cathedral, on the island of Sulawesi, in the east of the country, it was perpetrated by a young newly married couple who belonged to a pro-Islamic extremist group (IS).

The attack was carried out after the mass of Palm Sunday, which gives way to Holy Week, and made about twenty wounded.

“The attackers were a married couple for only six months”, and the man was in his twenties, national police spokesman Argo Yuwono told reporters, AFP news agency reported.

“The investigation is continuing to find other people involved in the attack,” he added.

The two attackers broke into the premises of the building with a motorcycle, where they detonated a homemade device, authorities said.

The incident happened yesterday on the outskirts of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Makassar, a port city of 1.5 million people in the south of the island of Sulawesi, about 1,600 kilometers northeast of Jakarta.

Police searched the couple’s home and other places in Makassar looking for explosives, weapons and other clues, Yuwono said.

Until today, 15 people were still hospitalized.

Indonesian police reported that the couple were part of the radical Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group, an organization accused of being behind several attacks on churches in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, in 2018. , which left 15 dead.

JAD is also involved, according to Indonesian police, during a suicide bombing in 2019 against a Catholic church in Jolo, Predominantly Muslim city in the Philippines , where 21 people died.

The aforementioned attack in Jolo was carried out by an Indonesian couple and claimed by ISIS.
