Allegations of child abuse have multiplied over the last two years, according to statistics from the Buenos Aires prosecutor's office, for which the Ombudsman's office on Thursday stressed the need for "visualize the problem" and promote measures to guarantee the human rights of children and adolescents.

"It is necessary to visualize a problem that affects different social sectors and to promote measures guaranteeing the fundamental rights of children and adolescents, in accordance with the observations made by international organizations"he claimed Walter Martello, Deputy Ombudsman of Buenos Aires.

Martello quoted information from the Buenos Aires public prosecutor's office that, in 2018, 3,152 children under the age of 11 have been victims of domestic violence, a figure that goes up to 8,279 if it is included. adolescents from 12 to 17 years old.

The cases mentioned by the mediator are part of the Criminal Register of Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, a computer system that allows individuals to identify the causes, check basic information and access relevant data regarding victims and aggressors.

According to the register, victims of violence under the age of 11 are mainly men and, if the age group is 17 years old, 65.2% are women out of a total of 8,279 victims.

"In the past two years, such causes have multiplied", said the deputy advocate on the International Day against Child Abuse. Martello badured that "Child abuse is no longer an open secret, a taboo subject that, silently and in many cases in a hidden way, crosses all social clbades."
