The archaeologist Mate Parica, professor at the Croatian University of Zadar, was examining satellite images of the country’s coast when he did something unusual. “Thought: maybe it’s natural, maybe not“, the specialist told the agency Reuters. Deciding to investigate, Parica and a colleague grabbed their snorkel gear and made their way to the site.

The avocados reached the east coast of Korcula, an island located in the Adriatic Ocean surrounded by other small islets. When the two specialists dived in the turquoise waters off the Croatian coast, they discovered something incredible:

What on the satellite image looked like a large, shallow expanse of land emerging from the seabed was in fact a submerged city. As the archaeologist shared, the structure appears to be an ancient neolithic settlement, temporarily located near the 4,500 BC. The mysterious town sits on a small piece of land that was once connected to the island of Korcula by a narrow strip of land.

Martha kalebota, director of the archaeological collection of the Korcula Town Museum, said the location of the settlement is most unusual: “We are not yet aware of a similar discovery elsewhere., that a Neolithic settlement be built on an islet connected to a narrow strip of land“he claimed.

Parica accompanied the sentiment, stating that the discovery of island settlements was indeed atypical. Normally, traces of the Neolithic period have been found. in the caves, not near the sea.
