Doctors from Klaipeda University Hospital in Lithuania (KUL) reported the unusual case of a man who tHe had more than a kilo of nails and screws in his stomach, that he had ingested in the past month.

The man, whose identity has remained anonymous, arrived at the hospital with severe stomach pain and after x-rays, doctors discovered the incredible amount of foreign bodies.

According to medics, the man told them he had swallowed nails, bolts, nuts, knives, wood screws and other similar items for some time.

“It just came to our attention at that time. Foreign bodies by themselves are not a very rare condition, but such a quantity is a unique case.”said Šarūnas Dailidėnas, surgeon in the abdominal and endocrine surgery department of the KUL.

The doctor explained that about 80% of foreign bodies ingested by people who present to the emergency room are eliminated naturally, but that between 10% and 20% of them must be removed by endoscopy and that about 1% of people have to undergo surgeries.

According to doctors, all kinds of foreign objects are usually found in the stomachs of patients. (Reference image).

“This quantity of these foreign bodies is unique. The operation was also performed because there was a clinical suspicion that all these foreign bodies had perforated the stomach “said the surgeon who performed the operation.

The operation itself is not surgically complex, but due to the large number of nails and screws lodged in the stomach, in this case it took longer, about three hours during which, with X-rays, they had to trace all the foreign elements inside the patient.

They found objects varying in size between 2 millimeters to 10 centimeters.

“I wasn’t very surprised, it’s just a normal working day”, one of the surgeons told local media.

“These unique situations happen quite frequently. They are different and unique in their own way ”, added.

But he also pointed out that in this case, “Foreign bodies” managed to pierce the front wall of the stomach, putting the patient’s life in danger.

However, after the operation, the man reacted well and his condition was declared stable. He also benefits from psychological assistance.

According to doctors, the man had stopped drinking alcohol about a month ago, along with ingesting nails and screws.
