The authorities of Cordoba indicated that, this Tuesday, June 22, they rescued four men who were shipwrecked in the Caribbean Sea, at the level of the coastal towns of Cristo Rey and San Miguel, attached to Puerto Escondido, a municipality located in the aforementioned department. . . . So far, there are not many details about the event, but it is presumed that those affected are from India or Bangladesh, who were looking to reach Turbo, in Urabá of Antioquia.

To learn more about the case, the Cordovan authorities contacted Migración Colombia, an entity that provided several translators to understand the castaways. Thanks to this, the origin of the men and other data of the event were known.

“There are several versions to be confirmed, due to the language it seems to be native Asians from Bangladesh or India,” said Heidy Torres Becerra, mayor of Puerto Escondido, in La Razón, a local media.

The authorities also revealed that the condition of those rescued is delicate because they have severe dehydration. Likewise, it has been indicated that one of the four men is more serious, for which he receives special attention at the hospital in Montería, the capital of Cordoba.

“Por el estado en el que fueron hallados podemos decir que llevaban varias horas a la deriva, tienen signos de deshidratación y una de ellas is encuentra en estado más delicado y fue trasladada hacia el hospital de Montería”, revealed the alcaldesa of Puerto Escondido a The reason.

These first approaches also made it possible to find out, apparently. found Asians are not the only ones affected. There could be more people at risk of drowning, as it was revealed that the men were mobilizing in a boat with 13 other people when they were wrecked at sea. In this group of affected people who continue to sail, there there are women and minors.

Bearing this in mind, the City of Puerto Escondido and the Government of Cordoba, with the support of the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar) and the National Navy, have launched a search and rescue operation.

Likewise, the National Police are aware of the situation to investigate whether it corresponds to a case of migrant smuggling. This is presumed given that the castaways intended to reach Turbo and at this point they could board another boat and travel to the United States.

It should be mentioned that this is not the first time that an accident of this type has occurred in maritime territory under Colombian jurisdiction. Usually in the Caribbean Sea, near Montería, in the Gulf of Urabá and on the other side, in the Pacific Ocean, passing through Chocó, ships with foreigners fleeing their country sink.

The aforementioned areas are one of the main transit points for Africans, Asians and Haitians looking to reach the United States by boat. Hundreds of migrants attempting to flee to Central America or the United States have died on the sea borders between Colombia and Panama, and another large portion of that population is adrift on the high seas.
