Pavel Yefimov, a resident of the Yakutia region, found the animal's head last summer on the shores of the Tirekhtyakh River near the Arctic Circle, reported the organization of local press Siberian Times.

The head was delivered to the Yakutia Academy of Sciences. Scientists sent samples and data overseas, soliciting the help of colleagues in Japan and Sweden, which allowed them to determine an age of 40,000, the Siberian Times reported.

The wolf's remains were shown to the public this week thanks to images that the academy pbaded on to Reuters Television. In the video you can see the head, much bigger than a wolf of today, covered with fur and visible teeth. He does not have eyes.

The next step for scientists is to subject the head to a technique to replace fluids and grease with plastics to prevent deterioration and preserve the tissue for study.

"This technique allows fixation with chemicals so that the coat does not come off and we can keep (the head) frozen," said Valery Plotnikov, one of the academy's scientists.
