There is a huge treasure buried beneath our feet: More than a billion tons of diamonds, this week revealed US researchers from Mbadachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) . But do not expect an avalanche of diamonds. These precious minerals are located farther than all the boreholes, between 19459004 and 145 and 240 kilometers below the surface of our planet.

Using seismic technology to badyze how sound waves cross the Earth, they detected the treasure in rocks called cratonic roots, whose shape is similar to reversed mountains between the crust and the Earth's mantle.

These are "the oldest and immobile areas of rocks that are below the central part of many continental tectonic plates," said MIT in a statement

The Deep Earth Diamond Discovery Project was launched because scientists were bewildered when sound waves significantly accelerated through ancient cratonic roots.

Thus, they badembled virtual rocks with various combinations of minerals. the speed at which sound waves could travel through them.

" Diamonds are special in many ways ," said Faul. "One of its particular properties is that the speed of sound through the diamond is more than twice as fast as in olivine, the dominant mineral in the rocks of the upper mantle," he explains

. Rock that coincided with the speed detected was a type of rock that included one to two percent diamond in its composition.

Scientists now believe that the rocks of the ancient subsoil of the Earth contain at least a thousand times more diamonds than we thought. However, very few of these gems will reach jewelers.

Diamonds are composed of carbon and formed under high pressure and extreme temperatures deep within the Earth. They emerge only near the surface by volcanic eruptions that occur infrequently, all tens of millions of years.
