An impressive explosion occurred this Sunday in the Caspian Sea, off Alat, Azerbaijan. Authorities are investigating the causes of the incident.
Dozens of users shared videos of the shocking explosion on social media, in which a large column of fire can be seen in the distance.
There are two main hypotheses discussed so far about what happened: a possible volcanic eruption, or an explosion in the Umid gas field of the state oil company SOCAR.
“Experts from the Ministry of Ecology and the Center of the Seismological Service of the Republic are investigating the explosion at sea. According to experts, the cause of the explosion was a volcanic eruption”Azerbaijan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said.
“Only a volcano can cause this explosion because there has been no accident, no explosion in a well, a platform or a ship. This is a sign of mud volcanoes in the Caspian Sea, which erupted and lasted between 20 and 30 seconds, “he added. The victim is seventy years old, director of the Center for Seismological Services.
After what happened, SOCAR first released a statement claiming that the explosion was the product of a volcanic eruption. However, a little later, he again issued a statement in which he withdrew this assumption.
As the pictures show on social media, the fire can be seen for miles. At the moment, there is no information on the victims.
Many boat patrols have been sent to sea to investigate what happened.
