The student of the Colombian University of Cauca Esteban Mosquera, a symbol of the social protests that rocked the country in 2018, was killed in the town of Popayán, apparently by contract killers.

Mosquera had become a public figure in the protests after losing an eye when he was put down by police during a student protest. This year, from the end of May, he was one of the main spokespersons for the actions of the National Strike, which he broadcast live on social networks.

In addition, in the media “Contra Portada” he published dozens of images of repressive actions by the police and the army against the inhabitants of his town, Popayán. It was in the historic center of this city that a group of men, apparently contract killers hired for this purpose, murdered him.

President Duque quickly posted a tweet condemning the fact that he was promising an urgent investigation, with a cash reward for anyone who could provide information.

So far, no decision by the judicial authorities in Popayán has been issued. The only thing that is known is that armed men approached him in the La Pamba neighborhood and shot him several times.

According to preliminary information, Mosquera received gunshot wounds to the head, who ended his life immediately. The crime took place on Carrera 1 between 3rd and 4th streets, in the district of La Pamba.
