Archaeologists at the National Museum of Gibraltar have discovered a large chamber at the back of Vanguard Cave, which is located in the Gorham Caves complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and which has been sealed for at least 40,000 years.

It was first excavated in 1997, and in 2012 an ambitious project began to determine if it had passages and chambers. that were plugged with subsequent sediment and several weeks ago, about nine years later, it was confirmed that they were.

For information emerging from the preliminary investigation revealed a chamber no less than 13 meters in the cave ceiling. She was sealed for at least 40,000 years.

The first observations revealed remains of Leonardo’s lynx, hyena and vulture, as well as spider marks on the walls, produced by a carnivore not yet identified.

They also found a large marine mollusk this must surely have been brought to the bedroom, which even today is still very far from the coast.

Evidence has even been found of some earthquakes from many years ago.

Following such a discovery, Minister John Cortés said: “These are exciting discoveries that open a new chapter in our rich history. Knowing the Vanguard Cave well, I often wondered what could be behind the sands. Now we are starting to get a first look. Work in this chamber will now continue with the prospect of exciting discoveries that have been sealed for over 40,000 years. ”
