Research published in the journal Total environmental science and carried out by the microbiology area of ​​the University of Burgos (UBU), in alliance with the Federal University of Santa Catarina, took a sample of November 27, 2019 in the sewers of the city of southern Brazil.

“This discovery at Florianopolis, as well as other discoveries made in Paris, Milan and Barcelona, ​​shows that the virus was circulating before we realized we had a problem“, said to Radio France Internationale the research coordinator, Alfonso David Rodríguez Lázaro.

He also noted that “this is not an isolated case”.

“Our study was carried out on wastewater and found that a large number of people were excreting the coronavirus in Florianópolis, in the Brazilian region of Santa Catarina, long before the first cases of contagion were reported in Brazil.”
