"Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, degenerative and deadly, it has no cure so far, there are only treatments; it is a disease that primarily damages the kidney, pancreas and lungs because the genetic defect makes the fluids in the patient's body thicker, "commented Evelyn Hernández, director of the Fiquí del Bajío Foundation

In other Mexican entities, early detection by neonatal screening is already a reality, which has made it possible to provide accurate diagnoses and treatments against the disease, and in Guanajuato, its applicatio n is sought after, although experts say that there is still time to make it possible.

"Right now we are fighting to apply the sieve, which is already authorized by the federal government, for the screen that is made to children brings the factor that detects cystic fibrosis, only this has been put in progressively working in the states, we still miss a lot in Guanajuato, is one of the states that did not set up the expanded sieve to detect cystic fibrosis. "

Treatment of this disease is multidisciplinary, involving gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nutritionists, pulmonary rehabilitation, psychologists, and when the disease is highly advanced endocrinologists are part of it.

The director of the foundation added that both nationally and in the state, there are no official statistics on the number of patients with cystic fibrosis, which is also one of the current priorities.
