During a peaceful dialogue that lasted a few minutes, the driver identifies himself as Omar Félix Cueva and admit having a gun in the truck, according to what the press reported.
“Do you mind if I take it for my safety?” He asked Jarrott de Cueva, according to video. The officer stood on the passenger side of the truck, then asked the driver to accompany him to the patrol car so he could read his name, but the situation got out of hand.
Sometimes Cueva gets out of the truck with a AR-15 rifle, without Jarrott noticing, and opens fire.
Then Cueva, 39, accelerated and left Jarrott lying on the side of the road, after which he was chased by New Mexico police. The aggressor was eventually killed in a shootout.
State Police said Cuvea had “violent criminal record” and that he was on his way to a drug business when he was arrested by Jarrott.
“Even when there was a tough situation the guy was always smiling,” New Mexico State Police Chief Robert Thornton said of Jarrott after his death.
