Scientists analyzed 113,582 index cases from adults and 253,168 close contacts of all ages, specifying that 5,394 people fell into both categories: close contact was also classified as index case when tested positive. Less than 1% (0.5%) of index cases were fully vaccinated, while 1.8% were partially vaccinated.
For close contacts, 2.1% were fully vaccinated and 1.7% partially vaccinated.
The rate of transmission to close contacts was 31% for family members exposed to unvaccinated index patients, but 11% if the index patient was fully vaccinated. These percentages indicate that the adjusted vaccine efficacy against transmission is 71%.
In addition, differences were found in the level of infections and the different vaccines. By vaccine type, the effectiveness of the inoculant in reducing the transmission of the coronavirus was estimated at 58% for the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine, 70% for Pfizer / BioNTech, 88% for Moderna and 77% for Johnson & Johnson. Partial vaccination only resulted in a transmission reduction efficacy level of between 15% and 51%.
In the case of close contacts who were not household members, the researchers say the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing transmission appeared to be 22%. What they suggest could be due to a misclassification of the index case. In this regard, the researchers admitted a limitation of the study.
Overall, the researchers say the adjusted vaccine efficacy for fully vaccinated household contacts after confirmed exposure was 75% and 79% for other close contacts.
