Margaret and Derek Firth fell in love when they were children and were married for over 70 years. Last week they died together at the age of 91 at Trafford General Hospital on the outskirts of the UK city of Manchester, after being reunited for the last time.

They fell in love at the age of 14. They had five children, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Were recently hospitalized after suffering from health problems unrelated to the pandemic, but was infected with COVID-19 there.

Margaret and Derek were in separate hospitals when doctors began to fear that she would not have long to live.

Her daughter Barbara received a call in which they told her that her mother was near death and they asked her if a family member wanted to visit her at the clinic.

“Of course, my father took the opportunity to go see her in the hospital. I think that’s probably where he got it (COVID-19), but to be honest he probably wouldn’t have preferred it any other way. It was impossible for me not to see her ”, added.

When Derek finally met Margaret, she asked him: “Where were you?”

Barbara said that from that point on her mother seemed to improve, but her father also fell ill and had to be hospitalized.

“It was a pretty sad moment, but it was really, really nice that the two of them were together.” Barbara said.

Derek died first on January 31, while Margaret passed away three days later.

Barbara, 50, thanked the ‘amazing’ UK health workers who allowed other family members to see the couple before they died.

The couple, who married in May 1950, “He loved to have fun and make the most of life.”

Margaret was an avid bingo player who trained as a typist and worked as a housekeeper at Bradoak School in Tafford, England.

Derek, for his part, worked for many years as a butcher before becoming a storekeeper. He was a domino lover, a hobby he practiced in local pubs.

Their last photo together is the testimony of a long life that they decided to share from an early age. The image went viral on social media after several local media published the story of the elderly.

Their relatives hope to be able to organize a joint funeral ceremony for them.
