San Francisco de Asís Hospital, in Quibdó, Chocó, confirmed Friday morning the death of Cristian Mena, the youngest under 11, victim of a gun and machete attack on April 21 with two other young people of 12 and 17 years old, killed on the spot.

According to the institution, the child who was in critical condition and in police custody after having had a hand and an ear amputated, suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest that claimed his life at dawn on April 23. Early reports indicated that he also had gunshot wounds and signs of torture.

In this regard, the Mediator, Carlos Camargo, said that “with deep sadness I received the news of the death of Cristian David Mena, 11, who was injured during the events of April 21 in Quibdó, Chocó. As an ombudsman, I hoped Cristian could recover, so that as a society we could give him a better future. His death should be a trigger for reflection on the need to protect Colombian children and young people. We cannot lose children to crime ”.

Mena had survived the attack because, according to one of her relatives, she could have played dead. However, Camilo Ramírez, inspector of the San Francisco de Asís hospital, pointed out on the day of the attack that the minor’s situation was critical. “He is going to the intensive care unit and depending on the intervention assessment that was done today, he will have to be sent or not to another party.”

According to Domingo Ramos, municipal representative, “this aberrant event occurred in the district of Buenos Aires, where the criminal gang “ Los Locos ” has influence, dedicated to micro-trafficking and that apparently he has an alliance with a criminal structure called “los Mexicanos”, which has a very strong presence in Quibdó ”.

Hector Trujillo, The government secretary of Quibdó, indicated that the events constitute “barbarism” and that progress is underway in the investigations to achieve the rapid capture of those responsible.
