"This is a good writer, but a bad politician": disputes between Vargas Llosa and López Obrador

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, said last February that he did not want to "become addicted" to a dispute with the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosabut in a brief message he clearly stated his position regarding the Nobel literature: "He's a good writer, but he's a bad politician."

The presidential campaign in Mexico had not yet officially begun, but the Peruvian author had already expressed his fear that Lopez Obrador would rise with triumph.

It was during the presentation of the book The call of the tribe Vargas Llosa inflamed the controversy by pointing out that if López Obrador wins the elections, Mexico will withdraw into a "populist and demagogic democracy".

"I hope that there is a lucidity in Mexico in the face of populism, demagoguery and failed revenue, as in the case of Venezuela. Some countries prefer to commit suicide, I hope that will not happen because it would be very tragic for Mexico. The statements of the Peruvian author resonated in Mexico and the reaction of Tabasco politician, arrived during a trip to Chihuahua, was expected.

Vargas Llosa and the letter that López Obrador sent to the King of Spain

A new chapter of the exchange of statements between the two characters came today during the participation of Vargas Llosa at International Congress of the Spanish Language which is celebrated in Córdoba (Argentina).

The Peruvian Nobel laureate spoke of the letter that López Obrador sent to Felipe VI, King of Spain, to ask him to apologize for the "crimes and abuses" committed during the conquest, there is 500 years old.

The question sparked a debate in Mexico and Spain, where Vargas Llosa resides – who also has Spanish nationality.
