Patricia Gutiérrez, General Administrator of the National Highway, gave details of the work that has been done for the renovation of the Caracoles tunnel. It is part of the overall work planned to optimize the conditions of the bioceanic corridor and will require an investment of 2 111 million pesos.
The head of Mendoza explained that for all the tasks, there is a $ 700 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) that in addition to tunnel transformation work, Caracoles includes improvements to the Christ Redeemer Tunnel Road; a double track between Agrelo and Aguas del Pizarro; resurfacing of the section between Aguas del Pizarro and Potrerillos and from Potrerillos to Uspallata; defenses to prevent landslides; and the Palmira variant.
"It remains a year and a half to the Palmira variant, because it is a work done on virgin land," he explained about splicing tasks between Palmira and Ruta 7 at the height of Luján de Cuyo.
Regarding the Caracoles tunnel, Gutiérrez pointed out that the offer envisaged the extension of the tunnel to transform the railroad track into a double lane. Once this work is completed, traffic will be deducted from the damage on the Cristo Redentor tunnel road.
We have launched the call for tenders to expand the international Cristo Redentor pbad, which constitutes the link with the highest level of traffic between Argentina and Chile. It will be one of the most important infrastructure projects of the last 30 years.#ObrasParaSiempre pic.twitter.com/4zi11IdiZ6

The goal is to have two double-track tunnels linked together by galleries. In this way, with two hands to Chile and two to Argentina, it will become an avant-garde step and meet the highest international standards.
The offers will be known on September 13th and the duration of the work is 27 months.
