Thousands of Afghans invade Kabul airport as gunfire is heard in the area

Thousands of people tried to gamble this morning in a new entrance to Kabul airport, frightened by the gunshots which are constantly heard around the place.

According to witnesses from the news agency DPA, Afghans have just learned that the north gate of the airport will be closed for the next two days.

A second witness said people from all walks of life were still outside the airport: actors, TV personalities, young people, women with newborns or people in wheelchairs, among many others.

Afghans wear six days of waiting for someone to allow them to leave the country via Kabul airport, the only part of the capital controlled by international troops.

Many desperate Afghans who have worked with international troops for the past two decades or who work in areas such as human rights fear for their lives, and many try to get themselves or their relatives into the airport.

A report prepared for the United Nations warned that Taliban conduct targeted searches to find suspected collaborators of overthrown government, despite assurances from the radical Islamist group that it would not retaliate.

So far it has been repeated armed clashes at the gates of the airport. The US military decides when and how to open and close doors without cause.

On Wednesday, the United States government said it was put pressure on the Taliban to allow Afghans to leave the country by the airport controlled by American forces, as they had promised and they’re not complying, according to Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
