More than 2,300 Britons have registered on social media to attend the “Egg throwing competition” planned to take place during the unveiling of the statue of the former prime minister Margaret thatcher in Grantham, his hometown.

“Boys and girls, not binaries, we’re having an egg, bow and potentially graffiti contest,” event organizer Kass Arif wrote on his Facebook account.

“You might be wondering where we do this. Now, in the wonderful town of Grantham, and we have a special target right now, a beautiful statue of the Iron Lady. Now it’s a friendly family event, so be respectful and then pick up the trash, ”Arif added.

The £ 300,000 ($ 400,000) statue had already elicited negative reactions from part of the population, who says the local government “should have spent the money on something else”.

A Twitter user quoted by local media said “it is crazy” to spend this amount “on a future pile of rubble in the midst of a pandemic, which serves as a rationale for stopping public spending.”

Despite this, the South Kesteven District Council recently approved the necessary expenses for the unveiling of the statue, an event that has yet to be scheduled.

The design for the statue of Thatcher, who died in 2013 at the age of 87, was made by sculptor Douglas Jennings. The sculpture is placed on a pedestal more than 3 meters high, which makes the whole structure 6 meters high, in order to prevent it from being vandalized.
