Tragic collapse in Rio de Janeiro: there are at least 5 dead and more than a dozen missing

At least five people died and ten others were injured after collapsing on Friday afternoon two buildings in the district of Muzema in Rio de Janeiro, controlled by armed militias.

Rescue teams continue their work to locate at least ten others missing and they make efforts to get out of the rubble a baby with life.

The office of the mayor of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the deaths of two people on the scene and that of a man who had been saved but who died a few hours later at the Unimed-Rio hospital. Two other corpses were found among the rubble.

Among the dead, there are 40-year-old men and a small of seven. The other three victims have not yet been identified.

Rescue operation

According to the Rio Fire Department, about 90 agents participate in the emergency services. In addition, the operation has sniffer dogs, helicopters, drones and ambulances.

Of the victims saved with life are a four year old boy and a 10-year-old girl, both hospitalized in stable conditions.

"Irregular" constructions

The authorities explained that sixty buildings in the area they were built in an "irregular" way in areas of "high risk of collapse".

The neighborhood of Muzema, controlled by armed militias who prevented the demolition of irregular constructions, was one of the most affected by heavy rain They beat Rio de Janeiro this week and left at least ten dead and dozens wounded.

The neighbors of the square have denounced the fact that the militias, who are criminal organizations integrated by corrupt expoliaries and active agents, occupy land and build homes for sale illegally.

The "wonderful city" stays in state of crisis, considered the highest in the emergency ladder, due to severe storms.
