Two victims of the September 11, 2001 at the Twin Towers of New York have been identified by DNA tests, as officially reported on Tuesday.

In this way, There are a total of 1,647 victims of these attacks whose identity has been reliably established, New York City chief forensic officer Barbara Sampson said.

The latest identified victims are Dorothy Morgan and a man whose identity was withheld due to the express will of his family, according to the AFP news agency. Morgan’s identification was confirmed by DNA examination of the remains recovered in 2001; while that of the man was carried out with remains recovered in 2001, 2002 and 2006.

They are the first victims of these attacks (during which 2753 people died in total, according to official data) which have been identified since October 2019.

“Twenty years ago, we promised the families of the victims that we would do everything possible for as long as necessary to identify their loved ones and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill the sacred commitment“Sampson said during the presentation of the new data.

He added that “no matter how long since September 11, 2001, we will never forget and we are committed to using all the tools at our disposal.”
