At least two people have died, nine others have been saved alive and nine others are still missing in the rubble of a seven-story residential building that collapsed Tuesday in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, announced Wednesday firefighters in the region.

The colonel Luis Eduardo Soares from Holland, general commander of the fire department of the state of Ceará (northeast), told the press that the lifeless body of a woman, yet unidentified, had been found "difficult access" inside the property.

The first victim was a thirty-year-old man who worked in a market near the building.

Firefighters have kept the number of people still missing nine, EFE reported.

The building, located in the upper middle class district of Dionisio Torres, collapsed on Tuesday at 10:30 am for reasons that are under investigation.

The rubble hit a small supermarket nearby and buried several vehicles in nearby streets, where residents and relatives of residents focused on finding information on the nine missing persons.

The wounded, two of them in serious condition, were taken to hospitals in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, while some were released as they did not suffer serious injuries.

Firefighters have established a security perimeter and intensified searches for potential victims with the help of dogs.
