A 12-year-old boy and a 71-year-old man were bitten by two sharks on the beach in New Smyrna Beach, northeast of Florida, United States, considered the world capital of attacks by these animals.
The boy and the man were taken to hospital to recover from their injuries.
The man was standing with his surfboard in the water up to his knees when a shark bit him on his right foot.
The boy was in deeper water when, after jumping off his surfboard, he was bitten in the right calf by a shark and was rushed to hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.
On that day, the red flag had been placed on the beach, signifying dangerous waves and strong currents.
United States topped the world in the number of unprovoked shark attacks in 2020, with 33 confirmed cases, according to the annual report of the International Shark Attacks Archives (ISAF) of the University of Florida, Gainesville.
Unprovoked attacks are defined as incidents in which an attack on a living human being occurs in the shark’s natural habitat without human provocation by the shark.
The 33 cases represent 58% of the global total, a decrease from 2019, when 64% of unprovoked attacks worldwide took place in the waters of United States.
In the state of Florida, with a total of 16 attacks in 2020 without any fatalities, it tops the global shark bite count list.
New Smyrna Beach tends to be the one with the most shark attacks in Florida.
