Her husband was 40 years old, polygamous and had several children with his other wives. One year after her marriage, Mariam became a mother for the first time: she had twins. Two years later, they were tripled and soon quadrupled. At her sixth birth, she has already had 18 children. To put an end to this uncontrolled ability to get pregnant, she went to see a doctor, but was told that nothing could be done because her ovaries were unusually large. He was advised not to use contraceptives, such as pills, as they could cause health problems. At 23, he returned to the hospital to find a solution and, again, the answer was negative.
Three years ago, the Ugandan girl was abandoned by her husband. She was left alone in her home made of cement blocks and a corrugated iron roof with her 38 children. In search of money, Nabatanzi was doing everything: hairdressing, decorating events, collecting and selling scrap metal, making local gin and selling medicinal herbs. But money is never enough to feed them and take care of their health.
