UN and European Union condemn arrest of Nicaraguan opposition Cristiana Chamorro

The United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) on Thursday expressed their rejection of the arrest of Nicaraguan opponent Cristiana Chamorro Barrios Yes his ban on participating in the next presidential elections in Nicaragua by decision of Daniel ortega.

The UN assured this Thursday that the measures against Chamorro could “worsen confidence” in the November 7 elections, in which President Daniel Ortega is seeking a new re-election.

Dujarric added that the United Nations has taken note of electoral reforms approved last month and the concerns expressed in this regard by national and international actors, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle bachelet.

Asked about their conditions, the UN spokesperson recalled that the government of Nicaragua has the responsibility to guarantee their security and that of all political leaders.

For its part, Peter Stano, European Union Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, indicated on his Twitter account that the legal actions against Chamorro are incompatible with a credible, transparent and open electoral process and He demanded that the leader of the opposition be immediately released “and that the measures taken against her rights be canceled without delay”.

Chamorro, daughter of the former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997), is considered the Nicaraguan opposition figure with the highest probability of winning the November elections.
