The United Nations on Tuesday applauded the opening by the Israeli authorities of the Kerem Shalom border post, which will allow the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
“We welcome the opening by the Israeli authorities of the Kerem Shalom Pass for essential humanitarian aid after nine days of crisisSaid Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
He assured that “it is essential that the Erez pass is also open to the entry and exit of humanitarian personnel“.
The Israeli authorities will lead the way to allow the delivery of fuel, food and medicine to the inhabitants of the enclave. The border was closed on May 9 amid incidents on the mosque plaza in East Jerusalem. The Gaza Strip is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance after a week of Israeli airstrikes that killed more than 200 people, including dozens of children.
Laerke said that “Access of humanitarian personnel and goods to and from Gaza must be maintained and appropriate measures must be taken to ensure that movement continues with Gaza“.

Pressure from the international community intensified on Tuesday to try to stop the Israeli army shelling and Palestinian rockets on Israel, with no sign of slowing down after a week of bloody escalation.
The conflict risks precipitating a humanitarian catastrophe, as, according to the UN, some 58,000 Palestinians have been displaced and more than 130 residential and commercial buildings in the enclave have been destroyed.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called for a “humanitarian pause” until a ceasefire is reached and the opening of the Kerem Shalom and Erez trade crossings. – both controlled by Israel – to allow humanitarian agencies to operate within the blocked Palestinian enclave.
