Images of the cremation and burial of COVID-19 victims show rows of massive funeral pyres on fire in an area of New Delhi that has been converted into a temporary crematorium.
In other photos, men in protective gear dig graves before burying the bodies in the town of Gauhati, Assam state.
The emotional impact of the fight against the coronavirus can be seen in photos of family members dressed in full protective gear crying and taking comfort in the loss of loved ones.
Impressive number of infections
Indian authorities on Monday reported a new record for daily cases, with 352,991 infections in the past 24 hours, as well as 2,812 new deaths from covid-19. With a total of more than 17.3 million cases and nearly 200,000 deaths, the Asian country has become the second most affected country by the pandemic in the world, just behind the United States.
Amid this new wave of coronavirus, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all citizens to get vaccinated and to act with caution in the face of the “storm” of infections rocking the nation. On a radio broadcast, the president said the pandemic “is testing” the patience of Indians.
According to political analyst Guido Larson, US aid to India cannot solve the country’s crisis.
