United States warned women and girls evacuated from Afghanistan were forced to marry before fleeing

The US authorities responsible for registering Afghan refugees arriving in the country warned that there had been forced marriage cases involving women and girls evacuated from Afghanistan.

According to sources familiar with the matter, this type of incident – the extent of which is still unknown – occurred before the fear of remaining in the country under the control of the Taliban. The US government relies on third countries as a transit point for Afghans who have fled and ultimately want to reach the United States or other countries. Once on American soil, the refugees are transferred to centers ranging from military bases to makeshift housing.

Thusday, dozens of women protested in the afghan city of Herat to demand that the Taliban do not abide by a male-only regime, in an unprecedented protest in the city since insurgents took control of Kabul on August 15.

The Taliban have promised that women will not lose their rights, or at least regress to the uselessness they had in 2001, during the previous stage of the so-called Islamic Emirate.
