Uruguay has recorded 4,412 new cases and 79 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours

Uruguay added 4,412 new covid-19 cases on Thursday after performing 18,835 PCR tests and reached 32,136 active, 508 of these people admitted to intensive care centers.

This was stated in the daily report presented by the National Emergency System (Sinae), which also states that 79 people died that day, a figure that brought the number of deaths from the disease to 1,726.

Since the health emergency was declared on March 13, 2020, Uruguay has accumulated 156,499 cases.

At the moment, the department (province) with the most active cases is Montevideo with 14,770, followed by Canelones (south) with 4,870 and Rivera (north) with 1,415.

In addition, all departments of the country are in the red zone according to the Harvard index, accumulating more than 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days.

Last Thursday, the general coordinator of the Honorary Scientific Advisory Group (GACH) – which advises the government on the management of the pandemic – Rafael Radi, said at an extraordinary session of the Central Administrative Council of the University of the Republic that he is “Start worrying” about the death rate of covid-19 which has fallen from 1.1 per 100 to 1.5 per 100 inhabitants.

A day before, the President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, spoke at a press conference to announce the extension, until April 30, of the measures announced on March 23, such as the absence of classes, the closure of free shops, gyms and sports clubs and the restriction of bars and restaurants until midnight.

However, he reiterated his intention not to add any other rules to restrict mobility. “We ask that, as far as possible, people move as little as possible,” he said.

On the other hand, 36.06% of the Uruguayan population has already been vaccinated against covid-19, most of these people with the first dose of the Chinese vaccine CoronaVac or the American Pfizer and a considerably smaller group already with the second.

According to the web monitor developed by the Ministry of Public Health, Uruguay has already vaccinated 1,248,629 people, 996,155 with the first dose and 252,474 with the second.
