The von Fink ingots were housed in a specially built vault with safe under the master bedroom, where the 91-year-old millionaire kept documents, family property and part of his fortune.

However, they couldn’t open the safe and left the place in a hurry, leaving there the tools with which they had tried to perform the blow: two oxygen tubes, a battery, a glove, a French wrench, a disc grinder and a screwdriver.

“When they first enter the ranch, the members of the organization they could only remove the iron lock from the safe and cut its first layer of iron who was thrown to the ground, ”Carmelo prosecutor Eugenia Rodríguez said in the request to formalize the investigation.

The gang, according to the newspaper, knew in detail the breakdown of the establishment because they had a contact who knew the place to have carried out work in the house, especially in the room where the safe was.

The July 26, ultimately, they came back at the millionaire’s house. This time with more powerful tools and an additional oxygen tank, they managed to extract 17 gold bars and a thousand krugerrands, a South African gold coin.

The Uruguayan authorities dismantled the gang in an operation they called “Operation Anonymous”, where they detained the 11 people who made it up. The whereabouts of the stolen fortune are not yet known.
