Vaccines against the coronavirus: looting of a plant …

The conflict between European Union (EU) and labs delaying deliveries of Covid-19 vaccines have escalated unusually. At the request of the authorities of the regional bloc, a factory of the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in Belgium was raided on suspicion that what was produced there had been diverted to the United Kingdom.

The incident occurred in the factory that the company owns in the municipality of Seneffe, south of Brussels. In research, European officials documentation and samples were taken to study the destination of the vaccines so far done there.

The EU faces a bitter controversy with AstraZeneca, whose authorities have announced delays in sending the doses requested by the unit, which intends to authorize this vaccine this week. Brussels says the lab is violating a pre-purchase contract signed in August for the delivery of up to 400 million doses.

The suspicion of the European authorities is that the delay announced by the pharmaceutical company is due to a diversion of production to Great Britain, which ceased to be part of the EU after the Brexit process.

The CEO of the lab, Pascal Soriot, denied that this happened. and he claimed the company was supplying Britain because it had signed its contract three months earlier, which gave them time to fix the defects of the British factories.

He also specified that the contracts signed with the regional block did not provide for “commitment” on the supply of vaccines. “We said: we will do our best, but without guaranteeing that we will get there”he said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Reppublica.

The response was immediate. “The European Union wants to know exactly which doses were produced by AstraZeneca, where and to whom they were delivered”The bloc’s health commissioner said at a press conference, Stella Kyriakides.

We want the requested and pre-financed doses to be delivered as quickly as possible. And we want our contract to be fully respected, ”he asked.

The official demanded “Transparency” and warns that the block (which until now allowed the use of two vaccines: Pzifer / BioNTech and Moderna) “Will take all necessary measures to protect its citizens and their rights”.
