The Israeli armed forces have reported that tests of its high-power laser, capable of shooting down drones, have been successful.
The tests were carried out in the Mediterranean Sea.
Regarding this type of laser technology, Israel has already proven to be among the most prepared countries in the world.
The project is developed in collaboration with Elbit Systems.
The device was placed in a plane and was able to intercept and destroy “100% of unmanned aerial vehicles”, demonstrating its capabilities in various scenarios, informants revealed.
The new defense system aims to complement those already serving Israeli forces, such as the Iron Dome and the David and Arrow Honda anti-missile systems. “This is the first phase of a multi-year program to develop an advanced airborne laser system that will add an additional layer to Israel’s tiered defenses set,” the defense ministry reported.
Among the main advantages of intercepting airborne targets are its low cost, as well as its ability to cover large areas and destroy long-range threats at high altitudes, regardless of weather conditions.
Brigadier General Yaniv Rotem, who heads the research and development directorate of Israel’s Defense Ministry, told reporters that in recent tests, the laser system intercepted several drones in the air, at distances up to ‘more than a kilometer away.
“This is a revolutionary technological achievement and it is crucial for the further development of our high power airborne laser system,” said Rotem.
