Recently the Pulitzer seal assigned to Darnella frazier a special mention for the video which records the moment of the crime of George floyd. We see it under the knee of Derek chauvin that he was convicted of all murder charges during the trial in which this case was the cornerstone.

Darnella Frazier and the importance of her video

Frazier’s mention at the 2021 Pulitzer Prize ceremony immediately became news as it is a rare case. First because she is a minor and second because it is not usual for the board of directors to recognize the journalistic achievements of a person without professional experience. This time, the distinction goes to citizen journalism.

Frazier, 18, was credited with recording a “A transformative video that rocked viewers and sparked protests against police brutality around the world”, He said Mindy Marques, Co-Chairman of the Pulitzer Board of Directors, at an announcement ceremony on June 11.

The young woman, who at the time of Floyd’s murder was 17 years old, took stock of the arrest without knowing that this video would end up being the fundamental part of the trial which made it possible to establish the responsibility of the police officer Derek Chauvin in the dead.

Michel Deas, teacher at Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern University, said the Frazier video “I was doing a public service”.

Even before Friday’s awards ceremony, there was speculation that Frazier’s video might be recognized. In December, it won him the award Benenson Courage Award 2020 of PEN America, which the filmmaker gave him Spike lee.

On the first anniversary of Floyd’s murder, Frazier wrote about the lingering trauma this experience caused in his life in a Facebook post.

“A lot of people call me a hero even though I don’t think of myself as one. I was in the right place at the right time“, wrote.

“Behind that smile, behind these awards, behind the publicity, I’m a girl trying to get over something that I remember everyday”.
