The protagonists of this story are Australians Geoff Trutwin and Nat Barnes who were off Wyndham, Western Australia, enjoying a fishing trip when they managed to catch a black tip shark.

But the peaceful day of fishing was interrupted when eight foot long saltwater crocodile clung to injured shark. After cutting the line, the men watched the reptile swim with the prey, only to devour it on the shore.

“We had been fishing for a few hours when Nat caught a black tip shark. While fishing for it, this saltwater crocodile decided he wanted to keep it. He rushed over very quickly and grabbed it. Crocodiles are not shy around people, they are very happy to be around us. You have to be careful because they are going to eat you, ”assured Trurwin, adding:“ I have been photographing wildlife for 30 years and have seen crocodiles here many times in my life, but I’ve never had an interaction like this“.

Luckily for the duo, it wasn’t a full-sized alligator, or the result could have been very different. “It was only young, but it was still about 2.5 meters long,” Trutwin said. “I got as close to the edge of the boat as I wanted because I didn’t want to lose my fingers. They can look pretty calm when laid on the bibs, but once he decided he was hungry there was no way to let him go. They are very powerful“.
