At least 90 people were killed by the sinking of a ferry overloaded by the Tigris near the Iraqi city of Mosul, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.
The main reason for the accident is that "the capacity of the boat was well below the number of pbadengers who were there," the ministry said.
The ferry, with a capacity of 50 people, completely overturned near the tourist island of Bosques of Mosul, in the province of Nínive, where dozens of people had gathered to celebrate other festivities, Nouruz, Kurdish New Year, Mother's Day and the beginning of spring.
In the images broadcast by Iraqi television, the boat is completely overthrown, while several people are driven by the current tiger, which divides into two Mosul.
Rescue teams and security forces are on the scene to recover the survivors, Interior said, adding that they had arrested officials in the tourist area without providing more details.
The Department of Water Resources had warned of the increase in the water level of the Tigris by opening the gates of the Mosul dam.
