Twenty dead and eight wounded left the fire on a two-storey bus burned in an informal area serving as a land terminal in the San Martin de Porres district, north of Lima.

The Fiori terminal operated illegally after being closed by the municipal authorities in January 2018 due to the clandestine sale of fuel for public transport vehicles.

Some eight units of the general fire department attended the emergency.

According to Peruvian media, the fire broke out at the back of the bus and seven pbadengers were injured, showing signs of suffocation.

Apparently, people died because they could not escape the flames and were stuck in the narrow pbadage and stairway that connects the first and second floors of the vehicle. The bus belongs to the company Sayibus and went to Chiclayo.

A firefighter pointed out that the bus did not have safety equipment.
