"We are contaminated by something", last sound sent by Brazilian tourists before dying in a state of intoxication

The Brazilian family who went to Santiago to celebrate the 15th birthday of their daughter never thought that she had been a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. On the first day of the holiday, nausea and vomiting began in the apartment they rented. So they alerted their acquaintances. "We are contaminated by something", managed to tell the birthday mother, before she died decomposed by inhaling the gas.

The victims who died last Wednesday in the department in the center of the Chilean capital are Fabio de Souza (41) and Débora Muniz (38); his sons Karoliny and Felipe (14 and 13 years old); and the mother's brother with his wife, Jonathas Nascimento Kruger (30) and Adriane Krueger (27).

A few hours before the tragedy, the victims began to feel bad and informed their loved ones in Florianópolis, Brazil, through an audio recording shared by the Chilean media. "We are infected with something, now we are in a state of shock, I think we are all infected with a virus that paralyzes dizzy joints and vomit," Muniz said.

"My joints become difficult, but help does not come. I think we are all infected with a virus that paralyzes the joints, causes vertigo and vomiting. I do not know what we will become, "he says in the recording, which was accessed by the T13.

In a second audio recording, the woman even says that her youngest son has fainted because of the poisoning. "He is dying. He was in good health. We try to put it in a bathtub with hot water to leave it inside and try to remove everything, "she said anxiously.

After listening to the audio, the victim's cousin contacted the Brazilian consul in Chile, who sent an official accompanied by police to check the apartment where the family lived. However, it was already late: they were all dead. The autopsy later confirmed that they had been poisoned with carbon monoxide.

The Superintendence of Electricity and Fuel (SEC) of Chile told the agency AFP that the department, which had been rented by the Airbnb platform, did not have a green seal proving that the gas installations were working properly.

Before dying, Deborah had spoken to the police for help, but the agent sent to the scene had not found the address. For this reason, the Chilean security forces opened an internal investigation to determine whether there had been "negligence or inaction" on the part of the officer who did not arrive at the department after the first call.
