What does BMW mean? – THE NATION

BMW, whose acronym refers to the famous German company of

cars

and luxury motorcycles,

means in the Bavarian motor factories Spanish

(Bayerische Motoren Werke). The reference to the geographical area, Federated State of the European country, is not a minor fact in the history of the company because it also concerns the design of its clbadic logo.

Strictly speaking, the company started in 1917 with the development of aircraft engines. The same year, the white and blue logo that symbolizes the flag of the Free State of Bavaria (a propeller moving on a blue sky) was designed.

At first, BMW's demand was strong because of the First World War. Even if, when the conflict ended and the Versailles Treaty was signed, it seemed to be the final phase of the society: the treaty prohibited the manufacture of war materials, which included aircraft engines, alone. product of the company at that time.

However, despite the financial problems and leaks of its leaders, the company was saved by Max Friz. This talented engineer took advantage of the experience gained in the manufacture of aircraft engines for other modes of transportation, such as motorcycles, more used than cars at that time.

In 1923, thanks to the idea of ​​Friz, they present the BMW R32 and begin a new phase which, in 1928, will result in
the manufacture of automobiles. The new incursion has never stopped growing and has transformed the company into one of the most prestigious brands currently having Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Bank as subsidiaries.
