What is commemorated on April 2nd?

On April 2, 1982, the Argentine Republic landed at the

Falkland Islands

. At 9:30, Rex Hunt Island Governor surrendered and began to wave the national flag at Puerto Argentino.

This is the reason why all of April 2 is commemorated the Veterans Day and the victims of the Falklands War.

The war lasted 74 days, until June 14, the day of capitulation of Argentina, after intense land, air and sea battles. The first bombing of the British navy against Argentine troops took place on May 1st.

There were 649 Argentine deaths (of which 323 correspond to the sinking of the Belgrano ARA general cruise, outside the conflict zone), 1300 wounded and more than 500 post-conflict suicides. British forces killed 255 people and more than 700 wounded.

In the early morning of April 2, the first pbadage between the English guard forces and the patrol of Argentine amphibious commandos landed the night before as part of the Rosario operation had taken place. A British shrapnel hit Navy Captain Pedro Giachino, who became the first fallen man of the Argentine war.
