The words “quarantine” and “pandemic” have been used the most in this year 2020 which is ending, reported this Thursday the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) from its website.

The lists made include, in addition to these two words: asymptomatic, containment, contagion, coronavirus, Covid-19, quarantine, distancing, uncertainty, mask, pandemic and telework.

On the other hand, “confinement” was the word for 2020, according to the Spanish Emergency Foundation (FundéuRAE), which chose it among the twelve who made up the list of candidates with coronavirus, infodemic, resilience, Covid-19, telework, conspiracy, tiktok, statuephobia, pandemic, health and vaccine.

Defined as “the temporary and generally imposed isolation of a population, person or group for reasons of health or safety”, the institution, promoted by the EFE Agency and the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) stressed that this term marked a good part of the year.

This is the eighth time that FundéuRAE has chosen, among more than 250 terms to which it devotes some of its daily recommendations on the use of the language, its word of the year.

The first chosen was “escrache”, in 2013, then came “selfi” (2014), “refugee” (2015), “populism” (2016), “aporophobia” (2017), “microplastic” (2018) and “Emojis” (2019).

“The health crisis derived from the covid-19 pandemic is the protagonist of the year and the measures implemented to put an end to it have radically changed the way we live and speak”, they argued with the institution and reported the newspaper The country.

“It is a fact that we are saying goodbye to this year marked by confinement. Hopefully the word that defines 2021, and in a positive sense, is” vaccine “, the institution said.

Containment was also highlighted as the word of the year by the English Collins dictionary, which recorded a 6,000% increase in its use compared to 2019.
