What will Mexico’s plan be in the face of the spread of African swine fever?

As a preventive measure against African swine fever, the National Agri-Food Safety, Quality and Health Service (Senasica) has strengthened defense mechanisms to prevent the disease from entering Mexico.

In a statement, the agency said it has a plan divided into three preventive measures.

First, inspection measures will be strengthened in all sanitary inspection offices which are located in customs at all ports, airports and borders of entry into the country.

– The ban on entry of pork products and by-products from the Dominican Republic and all countries affected by African swine fever (ASF) is reiterated.

– The baggage control of travelers from affected countries is extreme, in order to prevent them from bringing products banned into the country.

– From the notification, with the support of the General Administration of Customs of the tax administration system, all baggage from the Dominican Republic is passed through the X-ray strip, to detect products at risk.

– Hygienic mats are placed for the descent of passengers and crews of ships and planes from affected countries.

– The inspection of kitchens and waste from merchant ships, cruise ships and airplanes is intensified, in order to seal them for their return to the country of origin or to ensure that they are properly destroyed.

– All the products retained are destroyed according to the criteria of extreme health security.

– Activation of a dissemination campaign, so that travelers do not bring risky products to Mexico.

Work will also be carried out in coordination with the country’s pig farmers, both in terms of commercial and family production.
