This Friday, July 23, the day after the collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, on the border with Miami Beach, firefighters declared the end of the search for victims.
The collapse of the building on June 24 left 97 dead and at least one missing person.
The land where the condominium was built has been virtually clean, and while forensics are still in place to investigate the reasons for the collapse among the ruins, there is no longer officially a body to be searched for.
After a month of digging through thousands of tons of rubble, concrete and stones – of which no survivors have emerged except in the first hours after the tragedy and only the bodies were found – Miami County rescue teams -Dade abandoned the place for their barracks where, at a press conference, the end of the search was declared.
“It is obviously devastating“Said Fire Chief Alan Cominsky, who pointed out that the men and women of the institution worked non-stop during the days of 12 hours in a row and they encamped all these days at the scene of the disaster.
Officials who spoke at the conference declined to say whether it was yet to be identified in the hands of forensic scientists.
The ruins of the building were transported to a site near the Miami airport.
The last victim
Relatives and friends of Estelle Hedaya, a 54-year-old woman who disappeared in the tragedy, asked the authorities not to give up on finding and identifying her body.
“I just want my sister be at peace and be honored as he deserves, ”his brother, Ikey Hedaya told CNN.
Family friend Leah Sutton told the AP News Agency that the rescuers deserve all the credit for their work, “but after to find Estelle. ”
Authorities have identified 97 victims: 96 people who were recovered from the collapsed area and one who died in hospital.
If Hedaya is finally found, Surfside death toll reportedly rises to 98.
His family wants to be able to bury him according to the Jewish rite and for that they need his remains.
Estelle’s brother provided DNA samples to the authorities so they can identify her when they find her.
“We can get a call today, but it could also take several weeks longer,” Ikey Hedaya said in his interview with CNN. “[Es] impossible to know at the moment. ”
Hedaya explained that whenever she receives a call from Miami area code 305, she stops dead. So far they have all given the same message: authorities are still looking for remains.
In a controversial decision a few days ago, when Miami-Dade judge Michael Hanzman agreed to the sale of the land where Champlain Towers South stood, so that the victims of the collapse could be financially compensated, both to those who survived as well as the relatives of those who lost their lives.
Soriya Cohen, who lost her husband Brad in the collapse, said in a local television interview that she did not understand the judge’s decision.
“I can’t even imagine such a desecration. Imagine if it was your spouse or your parents or your grandparents and they were relying on it for money.”
