Vaccine experts at World Health Organization (WHO) argued on Wednesday that, according to provisional analysis of clinical trial data, two Chinese anti-ovid injectable products have shown “safety and good efficacy”, but there is still a lack of information. These are the Chinese vaccines of Sinopharm and Sinovac.

The vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective against covid-19 when the disease presents symptoms, but there is a lack of data on the elderly and those with other diseases, ”said the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on vaccines.

They felt that once presented, they will need efficacy and safety studies of these two vaccines “to assess their effects” in these groups, they said.

The group, which met from March 22 to 25, studied the vaccines of the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac laboratories. WHO decisions on type approval applications submitted by the two laboratories are expected in early April.

WHO accreditation in the context of an emergency procedure enables countries to speed up their own regulatory approval processes to import and administer the vaccine.

SAGE group chairman Alejandro Cravioto said experts will await the WHO decision on licensing before releasing their recommendations on the use of Chinese vaccines.

On December 31, 2020, WHO granted its first emergency vaccine approval for Pfizer / BioNTech, which was followed by injectables of AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.
