February 22 is known as the day of Antarctica in Argentina. This commemorative date is due on the same day, but 1904, the Argentine national flag is hoisted for the first time on the white continentduring the inauguration of the current Orcadas base on Laurie Island.

To go further in this event, we must go back to 1902, when The Royal Society of Geography of Scotland organized a scientific expedition to Antarctica commanded by William Speirs Bruce aboard the Scotia Vessel.

The expedition arrived on February 22nd on Laurie Island, belonging to the Orkney group, where the first observatory was built in Antarctica. A year later, the expedition returned to Buenos Aires for repairs at Scotia. By the way, William Bruce negotiated a rights badignment on the weather station.

This is how our country took possession of this site, the oldest of the continent. In 1957, Antarctica was included in the national territory of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the islands of the South Atlantic.
